When I was in 5th grade

When I was in 6th grade I started in band. It was my parent's choice, but I thought it was okay. Not every 6th grader was in the band so i missed class sometimes when other kids did not. I remember one time when another kid and I missed the morning part of class because of some band trip we took so we could march in some parade. I played the trumpet with the little sheet music holder hooked on the top of the instrument and it was close to Thanksgiving, about this time of year. When we returned to class, both my friend and I told our teacher why we were late. Of course it was an excused absence but I had a little fear when I approached the teacher to tell her my reason for being late. She said, "So that's your excuse?" And as she said it, I measured her statement and had about 1/10th of a second to decide if she was angry at me or not. I was not comfortable with the word "excuse" because for me it was used in contexts which the adult doubted or blamed the child. Of course it was my excuse, but I wasn't sure about the word and her tone. The 1/10th of a second passed and I stood there. I just stood there and tried to gauge her some more. Two or three seconds passed. Remember the feeling when you are on the spot--two or three seconds are eternity. After five or more seconds, she accepted the situation, that I was close to tears and felt paralyzed, or maybe she didn't recognize it. But after a spell she interrupted the morass and said, "That's okay. That's your excuse. You can go back to your seat..."

The situation was intense. I was not equipped. I was saved by my silence. Or was I?

Practice
I'm going to practice writing tonight because I'm out of practice. Went to George's office this afternoon for lunch. He ordered me a chicken pastina soup from a place he gets lunch from all the time. I enjoyed the soup and opened bag after bag of oyster crackers. Enjoyed the company for lunch for a change, then headed back to my office to heat up the lunch I brought from home--ministroni soup. Ate that with a platic spoon as well. When I got home I saw my wife beginning to make dinner. Tonight was "make your own Ramen noodles" night, with all the fixings. So my soup #3 included tofu, broccoli and carrots with a miso soup base. I think I won't eat my soup leftovers for dinner tomorrow.

Blogger's new clothes
Looks like google changed the interface for their blogging software at blogger.com. I'll have to live with it until they get it fixed.

We won our soccer game last night. It was a big deal for us because we don't win a lot. Got home at 1:00 a.m. so I'm dragging a little this a.m.

The kids are making a fan store, yes a fan store. The little guy just made a teeny-tiny fan "for advertisement". I guess they'll make their first million before I do.

Thought about writing a book the past few days, a series of books actually. The concept is very unique, but the plots are not compelling. So I thought about adding an element of fantasy to the otherwise straight idea. Fantasy idea like adding talking gym equipment. Now that I write it, it sounds stupid.

I'm writing just to get in practice again. Check out these zelf portraits.
