Scare-post of the day
Caution: Some soft drinks may seriously harm your health.

Highlight:

"Professor Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology and biotechnology, tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells in his laboratory. What he found alarmed him: the benzoate was damaging an important area of DNA in the "power station" of cells known as the mitochondria."
Where I Go, Natalie Merchant

Climbing under a barbed wire fence
by the railroad ties
Climbing over the old stone wall
I'm bound for the riverside

Well, I go over to the river to soothe my mind
To ponder over the crazy days of my life
Just sit and watch the river flow

Find a place on the riverbank
Where the green rushes grow
See the wind in the willow tree
In the branches hanging low

Well, I go to the river to soothe my mind
To ponder over the crazy days of my life
Watch the river flow
Ease my mind and soul where I go

Well I will go to the river
From time to time
Wander over
These crazy days in my mind
Watch the river flow
Where the willow branches grow
By the cool rolling waters
Moving gracefully and slow

Child it's lovely
Let the river take it all away
The mad pace and the hurry
The troubles and the worries
Just let the river take them all away
Flow away

Why I play soccer
I play soccer. I'm not very good. I'm alright, for my experience and my knowledge of the game, but I'm not very good. Very good is the guy with the dynamite footwork who can beat you or pass on a dime. I fool myself with my above average speed and a knack for tying people up most of the time. Defense traits. Although as a midfielder, I'm supposed to support the offense at times, of course.

But I play soccer for reasons that describe me. I play to commune with people. I play for sweat. I play because it's better high than almost anything except a 5 mile run. I like the physical play. I like to sprint, dodge, and run into people. I like to have fun, swing my legs, make decisions in 1/4 of a second. I really like that--thinking in less than a second about options and choosing the right one. Of course at the level of thinking, some would say, you've given the advantage to your opponent. Nevertheless, I play soccer for times like tonight. Not the instance when I wanted to hurt somebody on the team in red and flew myself at two bodies and made contact then took myself off the field before I either embarrassed myself or got a yellow card, but for the time when I called out to a guy I beat in the box "Toast", then apologized and thanked him for being a good sport or the time when an opponent trapped and turned a ball, then stepped over it awkwardly three times with horrible control to which I called out "I liked the first move better" and acted non-aggressive as he fought with himself and the ball. I play soccer because it fits in with my lifestyle; I can get a baby sitter for the kids on a Saturday night and me and the wife can run around together for 50 minutes on a co-ed team and then head out for a tall cool beer afterwards. I play for health. I play to keep my sanity, to meet challenges, and to secure confidence in risk-taking. I play because there is a dot on the side of the wall and it calls me. That makes no sense at all, but I don't mind running into the wall and knowing it might hurt. Sometimes I hurt and when I share my favorite time of the game I'll say it was when I tested Newton's Third Law of Motion with another player against the boards. I play for pain. I play for desire. I play to get better and to master something that is always inches and miles just out of my grasp. I play soccer and sometimes I am a soccer player. And I appreciate the game.
