Feed the Pig
Feed the Pig -- fun for the whole family!
June 28, 2007
First hydroponic tomatoes, now Dutch researchers try to grow meat in laboratory.

I was thinking earlier today about time. I played soccer last night, you see, and the second half went so much quicker than the first half. I was goalie the second half, so I got some action, but not much running around. When there was action, I had to react quick, so I was mentally engaged, but when the game ended I thought "This second half sure went fast." Now of course, in clock time, the two halves were equal or at least close to equal. So is that time the authority? I know with my mind the halves were nearly the same, but my experience told me the second half was indeed quicker. Is the trajectory of time experiential? I don't ask this to be quip. As you read this blog entry, it must seem ever so stale, like dry french baguette and yet if I ask you to click over to 43 things, you might click and read and click and read like there is no tomorrow and 39 minutes go by in a zip. Experiential and it violates everything we know about concrete time. Yes, we can measure time on my Timex digital watch and the seconds go by at the same rate minute after minute, hour after hour. Why, then do I yearn for the quick hours when I will read an engaging novel and I dread the slow hours when I read an impenetrable one? Just questions. But I wonder if there at least is a discussion about experiential time having at least as much credibility as clock time.

How a mouse works
Everyone in my audience has used a computer mouse, but have any of you wondered how the tracking on the mouse pad or desk translates to movement on the screen? For the answer to this puzzle, click here.

From Jay Leno's
From Jay Leno, Monday, June 18, 2007: "I guess you heard, there’s a huge problem with the Russian space station. The computers failed. The whole computer system went down. Pretty scary. But they’re hoping they can fix the problem and call tech support when they fly over India."

Mt. Fuji from Surf's Up
Took the family to see the movie Surf's Up for Father's Day. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, though not as much has Happy Feet. Happy Feet should be a staple for every 1st through 8th grader, like required reading, but in this sense it should be required watching, like Berenstain Bears or Curious George. Saw the movie and almost had an incident because our daughter needed comforting because of a mildly humorous talk in the movie about pain and near-death pain. Upsetting to her, she ended up on my wife's knee and they chatted throughout the rest of the movie. The charming coincidence was the intro to the movie featured The Great Wave at Kanagawa, which I featured in a previous blog post.

So for your pleasure tonight, I give you The Great Wave at Kanagawa for the Benefit of the aquatic, flightless bird.

A Very Deep Hole
Deep hole found in Mars:

I am reminded of the cliche "Here be dragons" on the maps of old, and through stream of consciousness browsing I landed on this valuable dragon site, which makes me question what they wear on Mars. Dragons, I mean.

I better be careful not to give away too many clues.

Death Is A New Day, Emm Gryner

All the world's on hold inside this room
I try to shine like a brand new star but it's hard to do
How famous do I have to be to see you again
How much money do I have to have to buy the end

I've got nothing to say and nothing to do
But hope I heal soon
'Cause death is a new day
A new day without you
Seven here and midnight where you are
I never knew that easy feeling could make all this so hard

If I called you a dead man I might survive
Dancing to your favorite rock songs in my spare time
Every other thing that breathes goes up against you
They try to scrape you from my skin but they always lose
As I close the door on you and end the crusade
I tell the pieces of you to go but I feel them stay
